Act 1 Weathered Carvings Bring More Lore to POE

Posted 23 May 2013 by Rushster at 8:29 pm GMT

Something new is being added to patch  0.11.0, they are called Weathered Carvings and they will bring more of Wraeclast’s lore to the game. These don’t have any impact on gameplay but serve as another way for GGG to enhance the game’s story.

Chris also detailed some patch changes with regards to leagues and Unique items.

We’ll be deploying a tiny patch later this week (probably 0.10.8d) to rename the “Default” league to “Standard”. This is entirely a visual change for tidiness and doesn’t affect how any leagues behave.

The 0.10.8d patch is unlikely to contain any new Unique items because we’re planning six new Unique items for 0.11.0 that rely on some changes in that patch.

A lot of people guessed that the “Onslaught” league (teased yesterday) is a permanent cut-throat event. It’s not, but we are very excited about cut-throat and are keen to run longer and longer CT events starting pretty soon. More info on this new league type and the foreshadowed “awesomeness” will be posted in the coming days!

Race events on Character Selection in Patch 0.11.0 – Screenshot Included

Posted 22 May 2013 by Rushster at 7:40 pm GMT

A cool new addition to the main character selection screen is being added in patch 0.11.0. A list of upcoming Path of Exile events are now shown which means when you login you can see exactly what events are available without having to check the full schedule. It’s a really nice and handy addition.

Chris explains how this works…

The screenshot doesn’t show the final UI for the feature (for example, two of those “Join” buttons should be greyed out), but helps illustrate how the character screen will look in the new patch. We still show the same number of characters and still have the league filtering box. The additional space came from the removal of the title at the top of the page. The events shown in the example are just ones I created for illustration. There’s no “Season X” :P

Chris Wilson Talks Path of Exile Servers, Bandwidth, Act 4 and more

Posted 22 May 2013 by Rushster at 12:26 am GMT

In a new interview on Games.on.net, Chris talks candidly about the challenges they have faced with Path of Exile servers and infrastructure since the game went into open Beta.

In the interview Chris also addresses Act 4 and when it will be released. According to Chris, Act 4 may not see the light of day for another 9-12 months but a lot of that depends on how much support they can get with funding from the community. With Act 3 still not 100% live, there’s still more to come with more content and a “more climactic boss encounter”.

Ideas for introducing a real cash economy for events are also discussed but it sounds like this could cause a few problems so I wouldn’t expect to see anything like wagering on races any time soon.

GGG’s model is for monetising the game is a real challenge with microtransactions that are not pay to win and it’s going to take some real community support for the game to keep development progressing in the weeks, months and hopefully years ahead.

Check out the full interview here.

The  0.10.8c patch is due tomorrow (later today depending on where you are) and will include the following.

Version 0.10.8c

  • Act and map bosses now have reduced effect of curses on them.
  • Block reduction is now a multiplicative rather than subtractive stat.
  • Added one unique item, designed by a Diamond supporter.
  • Allowed for the Dialogue volume to be louder relative to other volumes.
  • Tweaked various uses of audio reverb.

  • Fixed the interaction between Dominating Blow and the kill count of The Coward’s Trial.
  • Increased the safe zone around the marketplace waypoint and prevented statues from spawning in the waypoint area.

Remember, the big patch is due on the 29 May so it’s not far away now.

T-Shirt poll, Aus Server and Patch Updates

Posted 19 May 2013 by Rushster at 3:38 am GMT

In Chris’ misc news update there are a couple of things worth pointing out. The Australian gateway is now in testing and is apparently working well but there are a few lag spike issues still to resolve.

GGG are now looking to offer both the black and white t-shirts as options for the open beta supporter packs which is really good news.

Patch 0.10.8c is in internal testing and the 0.11.0 update is on track for release too on 29 May.

Vote for Support Pack Shirts

Posted 17 May 2013 by Rushster at 4:43 am GMT

GGG are throwing open their voting booth to find the most popular T-shirt design for the open beta supporter packs. Two choices are available and I have to say I prefer the classic black because it looks, well, classic :)

tshirts

Cast your vote now or forever hold your tongue.

Based on feedback from the community, we’ve narrowed down our t-shirt options for the Open Beta supporter packs to two different designs – a plain black shirt with the Path of Exile logo or a white six-linked shirt (based on the Tabula Rasa Unique item added in 0.10.5). You can see quick mockups (not a real photo!) of the shirts here. Please use this poll to vote on which shirt you prefer!

We’re seeing whether it’s possible to have shirts in a ~$120 tier supporter pack rather than in the $250 tier that they were in last time. It’s possible that we could have a choice between the two shirts, but we’re still interested in you picking which one you prefer so that we have an idea of the split.

0.10.8b patch notes and other updates timeline

Posted 15 May 2013 by Rushster at 5:41 pm GMT

The 0.10.8b patch for Path of Exile goes live tomorrow and the patch notes are now available and are as follows:

  • You can now play unidentified Maps by using them in the map device. There’s a 30% quantity bonus, but you can’t see what mods they have while playing them. This doesn’t apply to unique maps.
  • Added three new Unique items, one of which were designed by our Diamond supporters.
  • Reduced the damage from Lightning Thorns by 50% in Normal difficulty, 40% in Cruel difficulty and 30% in Merciless difficulty.
  • The Frenzy Charge Duration reduction on Darkray Vectors has been changed from 75% to 50%. Using a Divine Orb on your old Darkray Vectors will update them to the new values.
  • Megaera, the boss of the Crematorium map, has been redesigned with new stats, skills and AI.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where quality and quantity bonuses would not apply to unidentified maps.
  • Fixed a bug with NPC dialogue after reading the Letters of Exile.
  • The cooldown applied by the trap support gem will not apply if the skill is not trapped – this means totems created by the trap will not have a cooldown on their skill.
  • The Detonate Mines skill is now tagged as a castable skill, which fixes speed display on the active skill pop up.
  • Fixed a bug where a large golden statue failed to come to life.
  • Fixed a bug where if you used Dominating Blow on The Coward’s Trial unique map, and portaled out or died, the door to the next room would fail to open.
  • Fixed a bug where the effects of curses from maps were not reduced by Thief’s Torment.
  • Fixed a bug where “Screenshot saved” did not appear when global chat was disabled.

In other news, there is a now a rough timeline for upcoming updates to the game and even news that GGG could be moving office soon.

Australian gateway: Will enter testing tomorrow. Initially we want just a few people testing it so we won’t be spreading the info far, so it won’t be posted to the news but one of the general forums. Once we know it works then we’ll order more capacity and add it as an option on the login screen.

New supporter packs: Will be announced soon! Days away?

0.11.0 Patch: Still on target for May 29. Has secret awesomeness.

Act3X/Release: Aiming for very late September or early October. Purposefully around four months after 0.11.0 is deployed.

New GGG office: Still in negotiation. May sign a lease in the next week.

Second Phase of Path of Exile Open Beta Starts on May 29

Posted 13 May 2013 by Rushster at 7:01 pm GMT

GGG are going to confuse lovers of sequential patch numbers with the news that the next update will in fact be labelled 0.11.0. The most important news in Chris’ latest update is that the patch will include some “Some secret awesomeness”. Yes, you read that right! Hopefully we’ll hear more on that soon.

Path of Exile’s next major patch is not 0.10.9, as many people expect. Due to relatively important upcoming changes, the patch we will be deploying on approximately May 29 is labelled 0.11.0 and represents the second phase of Path of Exile’s Open Beta.

Some expected changes in 0.11.0 are:

  • More party loot allocation options
  • Direct melee buffs
  • Rebalance of monster damage
  • Improved resync code. The scope of this patch doesn’t include the more complex changes to the action prediction system, but will hopefully prevent deaths by resyncing more aggressively when needed.
  • Some secret awesomeness that I’m not able to reveal just yet. It’s bigger than the other changes in the patch.

As mentioned above, this patch is just over two weeks from deployment. I expect we’ll be able to share full details closer to the time (as they get locked in).

In the meantime, there will be some interim patches such as 0.10.8b and 0.10.8c which will contain bug fixes, new Unique items and whatever 0.11.0 features are ready for early deployment.

Australian Gateway Incoming

Posted 11 May 2013 by Rushster at 1:11 am GMT

More often than not Australian and NZ gamers get a bum deal when it comes to online game servers by having to connect to either the US or Asia. It was refreshing to hear that and Australian gateway is gong to be launching shortly which should improve performance. Testing is expected to start next week.

GGG has set the system up with their hosts so it’s fairly easy to launch gateway servers around the globe. The more support they receive from the community, the easier it is for them to fund the additional infrastructure required to get these launched.
